Ascending on String

Stay on one string. Play the four fingers in the order you have picked, shift up a step into the next position, and play the same order again — all the way up. What it drills is the shift and the hand shape, so the finger order is the exercise and every one of the twenty-four is here.

Positions
1st–7th 5th–10th

Fingers 1–2–3–4 on the G string, climbing 7 positions from the 1st to the 7th, in G major.

Each position gets four systems — the same four notes as half, quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes — and then one bar that shifts the first finger up a step into the next position. Every slur is half a bar long, so the bow keeps one speed while the notes underneath it double in pace.
